Your Weber Q2 runs on a single straight burner. It heats in a line, so the middle of that large Q2 plate, and the far ends, sit cooler than the strip directly over the tube. The Q2 plate is roughly double the cooking area of a Q1, and the cold spot grows with it.

Why the spiral

A standard burner is one straight tube. On a plate the size of the Q2, a single straight line of flame leaves most of the surface in the gap. The middle and the ends never reach the same temperature as the centre strip.

The Python is shaped to close that gap. The flame loops the perimeter and returns through the centre, feeding gas ports to the middle of the cooking area directly. On a Q2, that is the difference between cooking on the whole grill and cooking on a third of it.
