Your Weber Q1 runs on a single straight burner. It heats in a line, so the middle of that larger Q1 plate, and the far ends, sit cooler than the strip directly over the tube. The bigger the plate, the more obvious the cold spot.

Why the spiral

A standard burner is one straight tube. On the wider Q1 plate, a single straight line of flame leaves even more of the surface in the gap. The middle and the ends never reach the same temperature as the centre strip.

The Python is shaped to close that gap. The flame loops the perimeter and returns through the centre, feeding gas ports to the middle of the cooking area directly. On a plate this size, that is the difference between cooking on the whole grill and cooking on a third of it.
